Paxton Police Blotter: 3 arrested after 131 grams of cannabis found in traffic stop

PAXTON — The Paxton Police Department released the following list of recent activity:

— Three people — Makendra E. Sheldrake, 21, and Nicole Watson, 25, both of Loda, and Marquis Harris, 29, of Paxton — were each arrested on warrants and for unlawful possession of more than 30 grams of cannabis with intent to deliver and unlawful possession of adult-use cannabis in a motor vehicle during a traffic stop at 10:11 p.m. Saturday, March 23, near the intersection of Pells and Fall streets on Paxton’s east side. The traffic stop occurred after a police officer following a 2006 Ford Escape checked the vehicle’s registration and confirmed that its registered owner was wanted on an arrest warrant. During the traffic stop, police determined that all three of the vehicle’s occupants were wanted on warrants — Sheldrake and Watson on Champaign County warrants charging them with robbery, and Harris on a Texas warrant for battery by strangulation — and found a THC vape pen and multiple containers of cannabis throughout the vehicle weighing a combined total of 131.8 grams. Because Watson provided police with a false name, she was charged additionally with obstructing justice. The vehicle was seized by police under city ordinance.

— Kiersten N. Lyons, 18, of Paxton, was arrested for domestic battery and unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor on Friday, March 22, after police responded at 11:22 p.m. to a residence in the 200 block of East Pells Street, where Lyons allegedly battered a family member during an argument while under the influence of alcohol.

— No injuries were reported and no tickets were issued following a two-vehicle accident at 4:09 p.m. Friday, March 22, at the intersection of Summer Street and Allison Drive on Paxton’s southeast side. The accident occurred when Carol A. Gantter, 88, of Paxton, was driving a 2019 Hyundai north on Allison Drive and turned onto Summer Street, where her vehicle struck the rear driver’s-side fender of a westbound 1994 Ford driven by Brenda R. Sanders, 65, of LaGrange, Ky.,

— Ronald L. Lapointe, 28, of Paxton, was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs and ticketed for leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage, unlawful possession of adult-use cannabis in a motor vehicle and operating an uninsured vehicle on Friday, March 22, after Paxton police responded around 3:15 p.m. to a report of a reckless driver on northbound Interstate 57 who had struck a state-owned sign on the offramp at exit 261 in Paxton. Police located the vehicle — a 2013 Hyundai Elantra — in the south parking lot of the Paxton IGA, 144 W. Pells St., after witnesses who reported the incident had followed it there. Police determined that the driver — Lapointe — was under the influence of some kind of drug, and urine and blood samples were taken. Several items of drug paraphernalia and several baggies containing a small amount of cannabis were found in the vehicle, which was seized by police under city ordinance.

— Robert M. Schaub, 64, of Gibson City, was arrested on three in-state warrants, including one out of Champaign County, and for a violation of an order of protection and possession of drug paraphernalia on Thursday, March 21, after Paxton police responded to a call from the Ford County Sheriff’s Office at 10:13 a.m. indicating that Schaub was wanted on the warrant and present at the Ford County Courthouse, 200 W. State St. Upon arrival, police found Schaub in a vehicle parked on State Street in front of the courthouse, where he was found with drug paraphernalia and in the company of a person with whom he was ordered to have no contact.
