Parents’ petition seeks peanut-free schools at PBL

PAXTON — The parents of a child with severe peanut allergies are asking the Paxton-Buckley-Loda school district to adopt a peanut-free policy to reduce incidents of accidental exposure.

“Our 3-year-old daughter, Reagan Williamson, will be entering (the) Paxton-Buckley-Loda school district in the fall of 2027,” Nick and Dallas Williamson of Paxton said in an online petition launched on change.org. “As her parents, our foremost priority is ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment — not just for Reagan but for all children who face severe peanut allergies.

“Reagan’s allergy to peanuts is life-threatening. Even the slightest exposure can trigger a severe allergic reaction, which is why it’s crucial for us to act now. We believe that creating a peanut-free school district will not only safeguard Reagan but also protect other children with similar allergies. According to the Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), approximately one in 13 children in the United States has a food allergy, and peanut allergy is one of the most common and severe.

“While some may perceive a peanut-free policy as inconvenient, it’s a small adjustment with enormous benefits. Implementing such a policy can prevent potential allergic reactions and provide peace of mind to countless families whose children could be affected. Multiple studies suggest that schools which adopt peanut-free policies reduce incidents of accidental exposure significantly.

“We propose comprehensive measures which include: distributing educational materials to staff and students, developing emergency response plans specific to allergic reactions, and offering allergy-friendly food alternatives in cafeterias. By doing so, Paxton-Buckley-Loda can set a precedent for safeguarding children’s health and fostering inclusivity.

“Ensuring that children like Reagan can attend school in a safe environment is not just an individual concern — it reflects a community rallying together to protect its most vulnerable members. Join us in advocating for this essential change. Please sign this petition to support implementing a peanut-free policy in the Paxton-Buckley-Loda school district.”
