Arbor Day observance set for Friday morning at Paxton’s Pells Park

PAXTON — The city will hold its annual Arbor Day observance at 7:30 a.m. Friday, April 30, by the old cannon on the northeast side of Pells Park.

During the observance, the city will dedicate a newly planted tree in honor of an influential resident who died in the previous year, as is tradition. The newly planted tree is a swamp white oak, Mayor Bill Ingold said Monday. Ingold said he was still in the process of contacting the family of the person to be honored, so he was not yet prepared to announce that person’s name.

Ingold will give remarks during the observance. Also, Ingold said members of the Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School FFA chapter will give speeches about the significance and history of Arbor Day and the type of tree being dedicated.

The observance, which is open to the public, fulfills one of the city’s eligibility requirements for maintaining its Tree City USA status with the National Arbor Day Foundation.
